Grant Gilman – "Homewrecker" FREE DOWNLOAD
Ahhh the country breakup record…It has been a while since we’ve been treated to an album dedicated to the parting of two people, and no batch of lonely dudes have been able to capture heartache better than country singers. This winter, singer-songwriter Grant Gilman released Homewrecker, a fourteen track break-up letter that is a perfect companion to all that hurts in the game of love. Straight out of Terre Haute, Indiana, Gilman’s solo debut sounds eerily similar to some of Ryan Adam’s early work by the Patty Duke Syndrome; country music with some serious indie rock sensibilities. What I like about Grant is that he’s not giving us any bullshit. This isn’t a kid singing about how much ass he gets, or how much whiskey he can drink. He’s a guy who’s had some troubles in the game of love and he’s not afraid to spell it out for you. It can be easy for young country singers to write music that isn’t very honest. The genre as a whole celebrates the dustiest of characters, hell-bent on destruction and mayhem. Some young writers overplay the “whole” traveling musician card a bit hard when they first start out, spinning more yarn than a six-year old. Gilman isn’t singing about something he’s not, or hasn’t experienced yet. He’s just looking for a girl. And really, it is a theme that any person can relate to.
I’ve been jamming the title song, “Homewrecker”, pretty much nonstop all week. The track has a great fiddle line behind some really rocking country riffs where Gilman yelps “You got sick of all my shit/ And I got tired of sleeping alone/ So I broke up our miserible home.” Another great song is the indie-rock burner, “Girl Like You” which sounds like an early Nada Surf demo to me. Don’t forget the Slobberbonesque “(I’m the) One You Love’”, which sounds a lot like a b-side to “Shoot You Dead” from Crow Pot Pie.

This week Grant reached out to us and we were all too eager to give his record a spin and let us write something for him. He was also cool enough to let us give Homewrecker away to you free of charge…and come on, what’s better than free records? So guys, no one has an excuse here. Download this thing and give it a spin. I think you’ll find it to be a really cool record from a guy you’ll be hearing a lot about in the coming years.
