Intervention Record’s 7″ Series – Memoirs and Landmines/T.R.Y! Split & Young Generals

This last weekend our good friends over at Intervention Records sent us some new 7″ records for us to check out.  Now, we should let you know, we love when labels and bands send us vinyl.  It pleases our souls.  Yet, we’re not writing about these acts JUST because their label sent us vinyl.  These acts are absolutely some of the best punk bands in California these days.

So if you’re not familiar with Intervention Records, I will fill you in.  This relatively new, Redding, California punk label is producing some of the coolest splits and singles we’ve heard in a while.  In fact, punk legend Kevin Seconds has a 7″ coming out very, very soon.  I’ve got my fingers crossed that we’ll be getting a copy for review…just sayin’…

Maybe I should talk about the music, huh?  Well, the group that has immediately caught my attention is Memoirs and Landmines.  Brain just walked in the door and asked me who I was listening to because they sounded a lot like Face to Face.  Truth is, this three-piece sounds a whole lot like Face to Face, but has influences like Bad Religion, Samiam and Alkaline Trio among others, and really, I see them being lumped into this awesome catagory pretty easily.  ”I Hope You’ll Stick Around” is a classic punk song and I just love the opening line that yearns “With time do we slowly fix ourselves?”

The other side of the split features Redding’s own, T.R.Y!  They are a lot heavier than Memoirs and Landmines, and while I honestly don’t like this type of punk rock, these dudes are actually really badass.  They stress the importance of enjoying life and having a good time and their second track “P.M.A. All the Way” is my favorite of their three songs.  With lyrics like “When negativity has it’s way, in this rut is where we’ll stay/ P.M.A. (positive mental attitude) is the only way!”, the group reminds me of a heavy version of The Hold Steady.

The final act we’ve been jamming from this killer label is the absolute shredtastic (is that a word?) band Young Generals.  With dates lined up with site favorites Black Sails, Western Shores, these cats play a very accessible style of punk rock that while heavy, isn’t light on melody.  ”Reconnecting” is a great upbeat single but the following b-side, “Thirty One Winters” feels a bit more substantial to me.  Maybe it is all this damn rain we’ve been getting?  Either way, this is a band to watch.  In fact, all three of these acts should be on your radar.  They are all a shit-ton of fun and I’m looking forward to some San Francisco shows soon or FPM is gonna have to drive our asses up to Redding to see some killer punk rock.

So Intervention doesn’t do any digital releases yet so you can purchase all of their stuff here…
